A. Jay Preslar

A. Jay Preslar

Dr. A. Jay Preslar is a seasoned orthopedic specialist with extensive experience in the field. He earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in 1983, followed by a residency at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Preslar served as an orthopedic surgeon for 27 years before retiring from active practice. Since 2016, he has been dedicating his expertise to volunteering at Smith Medical Clinic.

Ashley Shaw

Ashley Shaw, Women’s Health

Ashley earned her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2017. She currently provides care to patients seeking Women’s Health appointments at our Georgetown clinic. Ashley has been a member of the Smith Clinic team since February 2025.

Beverly Crittendon earned her Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA, graduating in 2005.

Charles Wilbanks, LMSW

Charles Wilbanks, LMSW

Charles Wilbanks is a Licensed Master Social Worker and serves as the Pastor of Herbert Memorial United Methodist Church in Georgetown, SC, a position he has held since 2012. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies and a Master of Arts in Rhetoric and Public Address from the University of Houston. Additionally, he earned a Ph.D. in Socio-Political Communication from the University of Nebraska and a Master of Social Work (MSW) in Social Work, Direct Practice, from the University of South Carolina. He has also attended Duke Divinity School, Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, and the Center for Integrative Pastoral Practice. Charles has been volunteering at Smith Clinic since January 2024.

Charlotte Moore

Charlotte Moore, P.A.-C

Charlotte Moore graduated from the MUSC College of Allied Health in 1983, specializing in General Medicine. She has been working and volunteering at Smith Clinic since 2001, where she was also the Clinical Director for many years, and is also a member of the SMC Board of Directors.

Alexander Duvall

Dr. Alexander Duvall

Dr. Alexander Duvall earned his medical degree from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC, in 2005. He completed his residency in 2008, specializing in Family Medicine. Since 2022, Dr. Duvall has generously volunteered at our Georgetown clinic one Thursday evening each month.

Dr. Ariane Lieberman

Dr. Ariane Lieberman

Dr. Lieberman completed her Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at Roger Williams Hospital (a Brown University Affiliate) in Providence, Rhode Island in 1993.  She then went on to complete a Cardiology Fellowship at Albert Einstein Medical Center, in Philadelphia, PA, in 1996.  She has lived in Georgetown County, and has practiced here, since 1996.  She was last affiliated with MUSC before retiring at the end of 2024.  She is now volunteering some of her time at the Smith Medical Clinic.

Dr. Diedrich Waterman

Dr. Diedrich Waterman

Dr. Diedrich Waterman is a graduate of the University of Florida, earning his degree in 1980. He completed his residency at Charlotte Memorial Hospital in 1983, specializing in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Since 2011, Dr. Waterman has been generously volunteering his time and wealth of knowledge at Smith Medical Clinic.

Dr.Lau

Dr. Henry Lau

Dr. Lau attended the Western University of Health Science in Pomona, CA, where he earned his degree as a doctor of osteopathy in 1996. He then attended the University of California School of Medicine in Colton, CA, where he completed his residency program specializing in Family Medicine in 1999. He has been volunteering at Smith Medical Clinic since 2020.

Joseph Chafardon

Dr. Joseph Chafardon

Dr. Chafardon attended the West Viginia School of Medicine in Lewisburg, WV, earning his degree as a DO in 2021. He then completed his residency program at Tidelands Family Practice in Murrells Inlet in 2024, focusing on Family Health. Dr. Chafardon has been volunteering at Smith Clinic since the beginning of 2025.

Dr. Katherine Close

Dr. Katherine Close

Dr. Close earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Wofford College in 1983. She went on to attend the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, SC, where she received her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in 1988. Dr. Close completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC, in 1991. She has generously volunteered her time at Smith Medical Clinic for many years.

Dr. Lawrence Ferraro

Dr. Lawrence Ferraro

Dr. Ferraro earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1975. He then completed a rotating internship at Cherry Hill Medical Center in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, finishing in 1976. Since 2016, Dr. Ferraro has been volunteering at Smith Clinic, where he specializes in Minor Surgery.

Dr. Mary Baker

Dr. Mary Baker graduated from Ross University School of Medicine in the Dominican Republic in 2010. She completed her residency at the University of Illinois in 2014. Dr. Baker specializes in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Since 2019, she has been volunteering at Smith Medical on Tuesday evenings.

Dr. Michael Malone

Dr. Michael Malone

Dr. Michael Malone is a practicing physician at Tidelands Family Health in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. In addition to his clinical role, he serves as the Residency Director for the MUSC/Tidelands Family Medicine Residency Program. In this capacity, he oversees the medical training of residents, who gain hands-on experience and fulfill community service hours through volunteer shifts at SMC on Tuesday evenings.

Before relocating to South Carolina, Dr. Malone held positions at the Penn State College of Medicine/Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and at the University of North Carolina/Mountain Area Health Education Center in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Dr. Malone earned his medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida, and completed additional training at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.

Dr. Malone has been volunteering at Smith Medical Clinic since 2018.

Michelle McCauley

Dr. Michelle McCauley

Dr. McCauley attended the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine – Carolinas Campus, Spartanburg, SC in 2017 where she earned her degree as a doctor of osteopathic medicine. She then completed her residency program at Tidelands Health MUSC Family Medicine, Murrells Inlet, in 2021, where she specialized in Family Medicine. Dr. McCauley has been volunteering at our Georgetown clinic since 2018.

Nicholas Rummo

Dr. Nicholas Rummo, Pulmonology

Dr. Nicholas Rummo earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, NC, in 1969. He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at Roosevelt Hospital in New York, NY, in 1972, followed by a Fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine at the same institution, graduating in 1976. Dr. Rummo has been a dedicated volunteer at Smith Clinic since 2013.

Dr. Steven Meixel

Dr. Steven Meixel earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, in 1975. He went on to complete his residency in Family Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC, graduating in 1978. Since 2010, Dr. Meixel has been generously volunteering his time and expertise at SMC.

Dr. Victor Diaz

Dr. Victor Diaz

Dr. Victor Diaz obtained his medical license from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in 1990. He subsequently completed his residency in cardiology at the Department of Veteran Affairs, San Juan Medical Center, in 1997. In 1998, he completed his fellowship at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Diaz has been a dedicated volunteer since 2011.

Dr, Elizabeth Suniega

Elizabeth Suniega, MD

Dr. Elizabeth Suniega earned her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD, in 2013. She completed her residency in Family Medicine at Martin Army Community Hospital in Fort Benning, GA, graduating in 2016. Dr. Suniega has been a volunteer at the Tuesday Evening Clinic in Pawleys Island since 2022.

Ernest Stokes

Ernest W.Stokes III, M.Ed., PA-C

Ernie graduated from The Citadel in 1993 and earned his Masters degree in 1995. He graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina Physician Assistant Program in 1998. He worked at Grand Strand Medical Center in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery for 22 years. He currently practices as a locum tenens physician assistant specializing in Cardiothoracic Surgery. He has lived in Pawleys Island for 25 years. He enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He has been volunteering at Smith Medical Clinic since early 2025.

Eugene Mayeaux

Eugene Mayeaux, MD

Practicing physician for over 28 years with the Tidelands Hospital System in Emergency Medicine and Wound Care, and very involved with patient care in the Pawleys/Georgetown community for almost 3 decades. Dr. Mayeaux is originally from Louisiana, and he and his wife moved to South Carolina many years ago, where they have raised their children, and now are enjoying their many grandchildren!

Dr. Mayeaux likes to give back to the community, and is excited to be a part of the SMC team!

Jane Cooper

Jane Cooper, FNP , Women’s Health

Jane Cooper earned her Master of Science degree from the University of Massachusetts Lowell in Lowell, MA, in 1999. Since 2017, she has been volunteering at both locations of Smith Medical Clinic, with a particular focus on Women’s Health.

Jonathan Whitney, MD

Jonathan Whitney, MD

Dr. Whitney earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. He practiced medicine at Wellspan Health in York, PA for 21 years before retiring. Currently, Dr. Whitney divides his time between his residences in upstate New York and Pawleys Island, spending six months of the year at each location. He has been volunteering at Smith Medical Clinic for the past two years.

Karen Vujevich, FNP

Karen Vujevich, FNP

Karen has been a FNP since 1992, working initially in the Emergency Department for several years. She the transferred to the University of Pittsburgh and helped establish a primary clinic in one of the underserved areas in Pittsburgh. She eventually returned to the school fulltime assisting with research in osteoporosis and establishing a Fracture Liaison Service at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She retired from Pittsburgh in 2019, and is a resident of now a resident of Georgetown County. Karen has been a volunteer provider at Smith Medical Clinic in Georgetown since the summer of 2025.

Martha Lewis

Martha Lewis

Martha Lewis is a licensed Physical Therapist who earned her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1979. She gained valuable experience working at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center and St. James Hospital before founding Atlantic Physical Therapy. After retiring in 2019, Martha has been generously volunteering her time and expertise at Smith Medical Clinic.

Martha Wahl

Martha Wahl, RD

Martha Wahl, RD, is a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Following her education, she completed an internship at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cleveland, OH, where she worked as a Clinical Dietitian and Nutritional Educator. With 18 years of volunteer service at Smith Medical Clinic, she is dedicated to assisting patients in improving their diets by making healthier food choices.

Mary Abel

Mary Abel, P.T.

Mary Abel earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the College of Charleston in 1976. She subsequently obtained her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1979. Mary spent many years working for Tidelands Health, where she worked as a physical therapist until her retirement in 2019. Since 2020, she has been a valued volunteer at Smith Clinic.

Patricia Ames

Patricia Ames, FNP

Received her ANA Certification Family Nurse Practitioner from Pace University in Pleasantville, NY. She spent 25 years at Westchester Medical Center in New York, specializing in HIV, AIDS and acute rehabilitation. She has been with Smith Medical Clinic for 8 years. Pat loves working with the patients here, and know how grateful they are for the care they receive. Pat has 4 grandchildren and loves to travel.

Rebecca Cartledge

Rebecca Cartledge, APRN, CNM

Becca has devoted most of her career to women’s health, serving as a nurse midwife for the past 12 years. She earned her undergraduate degree in nursing from Indiana University, completed a Master of Science in Nursing, Nurse Educator at the University of Indianapolis, and went on to receive her post-master’s certificate in Nurse Midwifery in 2012. Along the way, she has also served her church in Indiana as a parish nurse, reflecting her heart for caring for the whole person. Since 2022, Becca has been part of McLeod Women’s Care – Clarendon in Manning, SC,. She also serves on the Pawleys Island Community Church Life Safety Team** as a medical professional, continuing her commitment to supporting the health and safety of our community.

Saint Springs

Dr. Saint Springs earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 2014. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at the Trident/MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program in Charleston, SC. Dr. Springs has been volunteering at the Tuesday Evening Clinic in Pawleys Island since 2018.

Stephanie graduated form the Methodist University Physicians Assistant program in 2018. She currently works as a Hospitalist for Tidelands Health, specializing in General Medicine. She has been volunteering at Smith Clinic since early 2025.

Suzanne Edkins, FNP

Suzanne Edkins, FNP

Suzanne Edkins earned her degree in Human Resources Management from La Roche College in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1992. She then pursued a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Carlow University in Pittsburgh, PA. Before joining Smith Medical Clinic, Suzanne gained valuable experience working with the VA Healthcare System in Pittsburgh. She has been a dedicated member of the Smith Medical Clinic team since September 2017.

Vasuda Jain

Dr. Vasuda Jain earned her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Ross University School of Medicine in Portsmouth, Dominica, in 2016. She then completed the Tidelands Health MUSC Family Medicine Residency Program in Murrells Inlet, SC, graduating in 2020 with a specialization in Family Medicine. Dr. Jain has been a dedicated volunteer at the Tuesday Evening Clinic in Pawleys Island since 2019.
