About Us
Smith Medical Clinic provides medical care to low-income, uninsured individuals in Georgetown County at no cost. We are a medical home for people who need help accessing their medical care, delivering high-quality care with dignity to our neighbors. Through volunteer physicians and nurses and the generous donations of our partners, we have grown into a full-service clinic with two locations.
Our Mission
Smith Medical Clinic offers medical care at no cost for uninsured neighbors in Georgetown County. We provide excellent care and treat each patient who comes through our door with compassion and respect.
Our History
Nearly Four Decades Of Compassionate Care
Smith Medical Clinic is the work of Dr. Cathcart Smith and his wife, Nancy. In 1985, the couple took an eight-foot-wide trailer and turned it into a medical clinic using medical equipment from the retired doctor’s former medical office. Dr. Smith then recruited five additional retired doctors and a dozen nurses to volunteer with him, opening his doors to provide medical care at no cost to low-income, uninsured residents of Georgetown County.
From these humble beginnings, Smith Medical Clinic has grown into a large clinic with two separate locations, over 160 volunteers and the ability to provide complete medical care. We provide care for over 1,300 patients each year. Today, we continue to build on Dr. Smith’s legacy and are committed to our mission of providing quality care to people who need it most.
Our Locations
Two Locations, One Mission
Smith Medical Clinic operates two locations, one on the Holy Cross Episcopal Campus in Pawleys Island and another in Downtown Georgetown. Our Pawleys Island campus is also home to The Baskervill Food Pantry, which supports our mission to improve the nutrition and health of our patients. In addition, each Wednesday we have a food truck that comes to our campus to provide lunch.
